Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
Student Information Kit
The Cert IV in Training and
Assessment Qualification
This qualification is designed to
meet the current and future needs of new and existing personnel working
within
vocational education and training. This
can include those that work in organisations that deliver non
recognised vocational
education and training, to RTO’s and organisations that work in
partnership
with RTO’s (can include TAFE’s, private commercial colleges,
enterprises,
community organisations, group training companies and schools).
Hunter Integrated Care have
customised the units of competency (12 core and 2 electives) into four
(4)
training programs, as well as assessment workshops to assist you to
complete
your unit(s) of competency. Whilst the
assessment workshops will certainly provide support in the completion
of your
tasks, you should also be able to implement your learning in your work
environment in order to successfully complete the qualification. If you feel you will have difficulty doing
this, please talk to the Training Coordinator prior to enrolment to
discuss
your options.
Hunter Integrated Care maintains an
extremely high standard for this qualification.
We recognise that TAA underpins the VET (Vocational Education
and
Training) sector, and we hope that the people we train, will always
maintain
high standards that is, in turn pass an ethos of quality on to their
students –
so we have the ripple effect.
Our priority in maintaining the
integrity of this qualification includes the provision of extensive
information
and consultation prior to your enrolment.
The TAA qualification should not be undertaken lightly, and it
is
important for you, the prospective student to feel that all of your
questions
have been answered, and that you feel comfortable in your enrolment.
We have designed a list of FAQ’s,
but please discuss any issues or questions with the Training
Coordinator prior
to enrolment.
What is the TAA?
If you’re preparing to undertake all
or part of this qualification, get ready for a crash course in industry
jargon
and acronymns. It is another
language! The TAA is our (affectionate)
term for Training and Assessment – usually referring to Certificate IV. The TAA underpins the VET (get used to that
acronym also, for Vocational Education and Training) sector. All people who train and assess for RTO’s
(that’s Registered Training Organisations) must hold some units from
the TAA
(see next question).
Why should I get the TAA, or Do I need the TAA?
This is an interesting question, and
one that has different answers depending on your circumstances. It is not necessary to get the full
qualification for most individuals. In
fact, the only people that absolutely must hold the Cert IV in Training
and
Assessment, are the trainers and assessors that deliver and assess in
it. Having said that, many RTO’s want
their staff
to hold the full qualification, and that is usually why we hear “I’ve
been told
I have to have it”.
Ultimately, there are a range of
issues to be looked at when determining the right pathway for you, so
talk to
the Training Coordinator prior to your enrolment to ensure that you
only enrol
in the unit(s) that are right for you.
I have all, or part of the old qualification
(BSZ40198 Cert IV in
Workplace Training and Assessment). Do I
need to do it again?
When you have completed a
qualification or units from the superseded version (usually BSZ40198),
it comes
down to a question of currency. Since
doing the unit(s), have you used them?
Have you been training and/or assessing on a regular basis. If you can demonstrate that the qualification
is current (as determined by the Training Coordinator), then you will
be
granted equivalence into the relevant
units from TAA. However, the TAA has
many units that are deemed not equivalent
to the old qualification, so it is probable that you will need to
undergo some
gap training, or be assessed through a recognition pathway.
Can I get recognition?
As a Registered Training
Organisation, Hunter Integrated Care offers recognition in all of it’s
qualifications. This means, that
regardless of how or where you obtained your competencies, they can be
formally
recognised. For example, you may not
have attended formal training in TAA or the superseded BSZ
qualification, but
you have been training the staff in your workplace for many years. Instead of participating in a training
program (that provides training that you may not need) you can be
assessed
through a recognition pathway. This
usually means that you collect a variety of evidence to be assessed.
Further information on recognition
is available from the Training Coordinator.
Are there any prerequisites for the TAA Training
Program?
It is not necessary to have
completed previous training programs prior to undertaking the TAA. There is a high level of language and
literacy required for the completion of this qualification. You will need to be able to read and
interpret documents and contribute to high level documentation. It is also necessary for you to be computer
literate.
If you are unsure about your skills,
please discuss this with the Training Coordinator prior to enrolment.
If I finish all or part of this qualification,
what will I be able to
train and/or assess in?
All recognised training and
assessment is carried out as per the Training Package requirements of
the
relevant industry. Generally, the
training package requires trainers and/or assessors to be vocationally
competent in the area they are training and/or assessing in. To give an example, for a person to train and
assess in retail operations, they would need to demonstrate a range of
work
experience and/or formal training, that would be to the level of the
areas they
are training and/or assessing in. If a
trainer and/or assessor holds formal qualifications in their industry
area,
they can generally train and/or assess to that level.
I am a qualified teacher – do I have to do TAA?
As a qualified teacher, you should have a range
of experiences that can be relevant to the VET sector.
However, VET
delivery and assessment involves particular skills sets and knowledge
that you
might not have covered in your teacher training—the vocational aspects
of VET
training and assessment. For example:
So… while your skills around teaching and learning are
very valuable,
the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment will build your skills to
meet
VET sector requirements. Talk to the Training Coordinator about your
current
qualifications and experience—you might wish to apply for Recognition
so that
your current learning and competency can be recognised. In this way,
the
requirements to fulfil the qualification should be less.
This list of FAQ’s, is by no means
exhaustive. If you have any additional
questions please contact the Training Coordinator.
It is important that you discuss your
individual requirements prior to enrolment.
